Fall Back

Daylight savings time ends this weekend. It’s a good time to have a look at your irrigation controller and consider falling back on that too! The days are getting shorter and cooler and your garden needs less water. Consider removing a watering day or allowing a longer period between watering events. For established, moderately drought tolerant gardens that are mulched and drip irrigated we recommend irrigating  once a week or less this time of year. Some gardens could go with watering once a month through the cool season. With any luck the rains will come and irrigation may not be needed at all. How drought resistant your garden is will be impacted by its maturity, younger gardens need more water. Related to maturity is soil type, plants often take longer to become established in heavy clay soils. Finally, you can improve drought tolerance by applying a fresh layer of mulch if your existing mulch has decomposed.
